It does remain a constant source for inspiration and healing for me. Particularly biomorphic forms, cell growth, minuscule amoebas, plant life and of course, as I grew up by the sea, I can never escape the otherworldliness of underwater sea life such as coral reefs, rockpools, algae blooms and seaweed growth. All these things I think about and look at when I am creating these paintings.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;\"\u003eThe shapes I have used and their arrangement are intended to form a visual intrigue that moves in and out of focus as we experience all the different layers of the painting and the otherworldliness of secret unseen worlds. I grew up in and by the sea. Bioluminescent organisms, magnificent corals, seaweeds, algae, shell forms and all manner of sea creatures from my memories of Snorkelling around the back beach at Flinders, Australia. All these things inspire and inform the subjects of my paintings, like the organic round forms, and influence the three-dimensional spaces, colours and tonalities in each artwork.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eWithin this painting, I aimed to create underwater fields of magical glowing creatures occupying mysterious dark-lit spaces. I am drawn to the nuances of light and dark and often reference the blurred light or ‘bokeh’ of photography, the dark-light of microscopic imagery, and all the image making documentary world of revealing life’s glow. The circles can be viewed as miniscule cell life just as easily as a dark underwater scene with drifting jellyfish or bioluminescent organisms passing by. The aim was to create something universal, sublime and beautiful yet also possessing a feeling of fragility and tranquillity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e”I feel like I am gently floating like jelly-fish” is a lovely comment I so often receive from this series.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eThe monochrome palette reflects nature and is inspired by the mini-worlds discovered in rock pools and coral reefs in particular to the Basalt beaches around the southern coast of Australia where I grew up. In my dreams and memories, the black basalt rocks of these beach’s create a sharp contrast to the barnacle growths and wildly coloured algae’s and seaweeds of the area.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eRecently it has become important to make paintings that talk about the current wellness of our oceans and waterways. I have started adding tiny fragments of plastic, (sourced from years of beach combing), to my paintings. These tiny plastic bits were destined to become Nano-plastics and do horrendous damage in our eco-systems on a macro \u0026amp; microscopic scale. I endeavour to make these connections to nature in the paintings.
