‘Aqueous Drift – Reef Camouflage I’ is a large, original abstract painting inspired by the quiet wonder of underwater worlds where the microscopic and the vast coexist in constant, glowing motion.

This immersive work invites close viewing. Layers of organic shapes and drifting forms create subtle visual vibrations, echoing the rhythms of aquatic life, molecular structures, and bioluminescent organisms hidden beneath the ocean’s surface. The painting can be read many ways for instance as cellular life in flux, a floating jellyfish swarm, or an underwater garden where coral, algae, and light gently collide. Within the composition, a partially camouflaged stingray drifts quietly by, revealed slowly, almost as a secret.

The colour palette is rich and luminous. Jewel-like ultramarine blues and deep teals are offset by glowing burnt orange and flashes of near-fluorescent pink, while soft whites float against deep blue-black passages. Together, these contrasts create a sense of depth, movement, and otherworldliness — a feeling of being suspended within the waters of life.

This painting belongs to my Aquatic Series, an ongoing exploration of the parallels between art and science. I am endlessly fascinated by the microscopic minutiae of life, with all its order and chaos, the cellular patterns, the things that are profoundly real yet invisible to our everyday sight. Circular and organic motifs reference cellular structures, aquatic organisms, and the pulsating rhythms that repeat across nature and the universe.

Many collectors describe a sense of calm and gentle wonder when living with works from this series.

“I feel like I am gently floating like jellyfish,” is a comment I hear often and one I treasure.
