'ABOVE & BELOW'

Exhibitions by Jacquelyn Stephens and Greg Elms

5th December 2024 - 30th January 2025

Level 35 Promenade,

Sofitel Melbourne On Collins

'Melbourne-based creatives Jacquelyn Stephens and Greg Elms present Above & Below, a celebration of the natural world through photography and painting. Stephens, inspired by her coastal upbringing, paints vibrant underwater landscapes that reimagine the microscopic and aquatic worlds. Her works evoke memories of snorkeling, rock-pooling, and the awe of marine life.

Elms, known for his artistic exploration of the intersection between art and science, captures the transient beauty of Victoria's salt lakes, revealing their abstract, otherworldly qualities from an aerial perspective. Together, their art invites viewers to explore unseen environments, connecting science, nature, and the sublime beauty of life both above and below the surface'.

ABOUT THIS PAINTING

This big painting allows you to come in close to experience and enjoy this painting inspired by the sea-life, rockpools and microscopic life.

I was lucky to grow up by and, most of the time, in the sea. So much so, that I think I have brine for blood and salty bones. The echoes of the sea are never far. And, now living in the city, I do miss being so close to the rugged southern coast. It does remain a constant source for inspiration and healing for me. My message is always be kind to the ocean and to the delicate world around you.

‘Bio Bloom Reef Echo I' belongs to my ‘Aqua – Bio Bloom’ Series, inspired by microscopic other worlds and aquatic wonderlands. Particularly biomorphic forms, cell growth, minuscule amoebas, plant life and of course, as I grew up by the sea, I can never escape the otherworldliness of underwater sea life such as coral reefs, rockpools, algae blooms and seaweed growth. All these things I think about and look at when I am creating these paintings.

There are many subtle layers and colours to this piece which aim to reflect nature and are inspired by the mini-worlds discovered in rock pools, coral reefs and sea-life, in particular the red ochre and black basalt rocks of Australia's southern coast covered in coral and barnacle growth.

The shapes I have used and their arrangement are intended to form a visual intrigue that moves in and out of focus as we experience all the different layers of the painting and the otherworldliness of secret unseen worlds. The hope is to relate and connect to our memories of things in nature.

Ultimately the paintings are about our sense of awe and wonder at these miraculous building blocks of life. The hope is that the paintings trigger a beautiful uplifting and contemplative experience for the viewer. An experience that also reminds us of the beauty in, and of our important relationship to, the fragile natural world.

I enjoy that my paintings seem to make people smile with a sense of wonderment and feelings of happiness as well as giving their walls interest and a splash of colour for years to come.
