I was lucky to grow up by the sea on the Mornington Peninsula. The ocean astounds me. The sea-life and multi-layered forms beneath the surface make for a place of beauty, discovery and otherworldliness.

‘Bio Bloom Rockpool Musings V’ is a tribute to my love of the sea and inspired by my years of fossicking along the local tidelines, especially the rock pools of my beloved Blowhole Beach Flinders, where I grew up. And now the rugged coastal life of Phillip Island where I dwell most of the time.

There is plenty of texture and layered depth to the surface of this painting and a beautiful bright colour palette. The colours and forms are inspired by the sea, reef and rockpool life and the microscopic-worlds within. A visual journey through the layers of this painting is aiming to connect to the journey of discovery one might experience in a rockpool.

More recently it has become important to make paintings that talk about the current wellness of our oceans. I add tiny fragments of plastic, sourced from years of beach combing, to my paintings. Sometimes using the plastic, moulded and faded by the sea, as a formal colour device and sometimes as an invisible trace. Either way it is the notion of the plastic being there (visible or not) that is important as well as adding colour and texture.

Ultimately the painting is about connecting to our sense of awe and wonder at the beauty of nature and the miraculous building blocks of all life. The hope is that the painting triggers a contemplative experience for the viewer. An experience that reminds us of the beauty in, and of our important relationship to, this fragile natural world.

What I enjoy most about my paintings is they make people smile with a sense of wonderment and feelings of happiness as well as giving their walls a bright talking point for years to come.
