Sofitel Melbourne On Collins
'Melbourne-based creatives Jacquelyn Stephens and Greg Elms present Above & Below, a celebration of the natural world through photography and painting. Stephens, inspired by her coastal upbringing, paints vibrant underwater landscapes that reimagine the microscopic and aquatic worlds. Her works evoke memories of snorkeling, rock-pooling, and the awe of marine life.
Elms, known for his artistic exploration of the intersection between art and science, captures the transient beauty of Victoria's salt lakes, revealing their abstract, otherworldly qualities from an aerial perspective. Together, their art invites viewers to explore unseen environments, connecting science, nature, and the sublime beauty of life both above and below the surface'.
ABOUT THIS PAINTING
I was lucky to grow up by and, most of the time, in the sea. So much so, that I think I have brine for blood and salty bones. The echoes of the sea are never far. And now living in the city, I do miss being so close to the rugged southern coast. It does remain a constant source for inspiration and healing for me. My message is always be kind to the ocean and to the delicate world around you.
This one has a beautiful feeling of growth and blooming. Akin to the beginnings of life on a miniscule scale.
‘Bio Cluster Basalt Bloom III’ belongs to my ‘Aqua Vitae’ Series, inspired by microscopic other worlds and aquatic wonderlands. Particularly cell growth, minuscule amoebas, plant life and of course, as I grew up by the sea, I can never escape the otherworldliness of underwater sea life such as coral, algae blooms and seaweed growth. The shapes I have used and their arrangement are intended to form visual intrigue moving in and out of focus and relating to our memories of mysterious little life forms in nature.
The monochrome palette reflects nature and is inspired by the mini-worlds discovered in rock pools and coral reefs in particular to the Basalt beaches around the southern coast of Australia where I grew up. In my dreams and memories, the black basalt rocks of these beaches create a sharp contrast to the barnacle growths and wildly coloured algae and seaweeds of the area. The subtle colours add to the otherworldly glow and relate to the many different species and forms of sea-life in rock-pools and reefs.
Ultimately the paintings are about connecting with our sense of awe and wonder at nature and the miraculous building blocks of all life.
What I enjoy most about my paintings is they make people smile with a sense of wonderment and feelings of happiness as well as giving their walls intrigue and finesse for years to come.
