This original one-off painting continues my deep fascination with the glowing, delicate beauty found in coral reefs, rock-pool worlds and all the microscopic life hidden beneath the water’s surface.

In this piece, soft-focus layers and drifting circular forms create a sense of moving gently in and out of an underwater glow, almost like watching coral blooms release their light-filled spores into the sea. I build these works slowly, using many translucent glazes to create that subtle luminosity and the feeling of tiny organisms suspended in illuminated water.

My lifelong pull toward the ocean is woven through every part of this painting. The round forms echo bioluminescent algae, coral spawning, shell fragments and the fragile little sea creatures I grew up observing while snorkelling around Flinders. They also echo the patterns of light itself, microscopic light on cells on glass under the microscope, blurred reflections, and the soft “bokeh” light glow often captured in photography.

Collectors often tell me this series feels calming and expansive, like drifting underwater with jellyfish or settling into a quiet moment of meditation.

My hope is that this painting brings a sense of wonder, luminous beauty and a gentle connection to the natural world… something that continues to reveal itself each time you look.
