The dramatic dark and light contrast in this painting create an otherworldly feel. This one has a wonderfully textured surface with many undulations and subtle movement from the layers in the underpainting. I have pared back the colour more in this series of paintings in an almost Zen-like fashion. This artwork has a splash of colour but maintains it's minimalist elegance and a sense movement, calm and simplicity.

‘Bioluminous Tideline Dwellers I’ continues with my fascination and joy inspired microscopic-worlds, biology and sea-life, exploring the most miniscule fragments of the universe. The circular organic motifs and patterns allude to cellular life forms, dainty aquatic-life and to the visceral otherworldliness of the building blocks of life like cells, amoeba, and molecules and as the title suggests, bioluminescent sea-life. The circles can be viewed as miniscule cell life just as easily as a dark underwater scene with drifting jellyfish or bioluminescent organisms passing by. The aim was to create something universal, sublime and beautiful yet also possessing a feeling of fragility and tranquillity.

”I feel like I am gently floating like jelly-fish” is a lovely comment I so often receive from this series.

The palette reflects nature and is inspired by the mini-worlds discovered in rock pools and coral reefs in particular to the Basalt beaches around the southern coast of Australia where I grew up. In my dreams and memories, the black basalt rocks of these beach’s create a sharp contrast to the barnacle growths and wildly coloured algae’s and seaweeds of the area.

Recently it has become important to make paintings that talk about the current wellness of our oceans and waterways. I have started adding tiny fragments of plastic, (sourced from years of beach combing), to my paintings. These tiny plastic bits were destined to become Nano-plastics and do horrendous damage in our eco-systems on a macro & microscopic scale. I crush the plastic pieces and stick them into/onto my paintings where they disrupt the smoothness of the paint and to conceptually reflect the current health of our oceans and waterways.

Ultimately the paintings are about our sense of awe and wonder at nature and the miraculous building blocks of all life.

What I enjoy most about my paintings is they make people smile with a sense of wonderment and feelings of happiness as well as giving their walls style and finesse with a spot of otherworldly nature for years to come.

This is one is a mini series of paintings that look stunning hanging together. The others are coming soon Keep a look out on my other listings.
