There is something about a coastal storm that I find irresistible. The tension in the air, the sudden darkness, the falling rain and the restless movement of the sea.

‘Coastal Deluge I’ sits somewhere between those stormy coastal moments and the hidden worlds beneath the surface.

Azure and midnight blues move through softer greys and greens, with delicate circular forms, dots and fluid marks creating a sense of movement and quiet energy. Looking closely, the forms can begin to suggest many things at once… microscopic cell life, molecules, floating jellyfish, coral blooms or perhaps the foam and movement of an incoming storm above and below the surface.

I love that ambiguity.

My paintings often move between the microscopic and the vast. I’m fascinated by the way the unseen structures of life can echo the forms we encounter in the ocean, organic, beautiful, slightly mysterious and constantly changing.

Growing up by the sea, I spent much of my childhood in and around the water, and that sense of discovery continues to find its way into my paintings. The colours, light and movement of rock pools, sea life and underwater spaces are always somewhere in the work, even when they aren't immediately recognisable.

There is also a lovely tension between order and chaos here. The painting can be read as a tiny cellular world, a gathering of aquatic life, or the larger drama of weather moving across the coast.

Coastal Deluge I is a generous square work that rewards both distance and closer looking. From across the room, it creates an immersive field of colour and movement; come closer and the layers, marks and small organic forms begin to reveal themselves.

I particularly love paintings that continue to offer something new after they have been living with you for a while.

This is one of a pair, with Coastal Deluge II designed to sit beautifully alongside it. Together, the two works create an expansive, flowing field of colour and movement.
