‘Sometimes of Ether and Water III’ makes reference to my ‘Aquatic’ series and my ‘Bokeh Light’ studies. Each in a round-about way exploring the sublime beauty found in microscopic-worlds, sub-atomic particles, the sea and mostly the effervescence and glow contained within the all life.

There is much here for your eyes to explore. The dramatic darks and subtle lights in this painting create an otherworldly feel. There are many layers of dots and colours giving the painting a soft 3D effect. This together with the highly defined circular forms drifting across the surface, move the eye in and out of focus. The layering and glazing technique I use creates an ethereal amorphous glow to the piece. The dark red -oxide background, pinks, warm apricots and yellows, together with other splashes of colour give the painting a rich warm quality.

The circular organic motifs and the organic cluster patterns allude to cellular life forms, dainty aquatic-life and to the visceral otherworldliness of the building blocks of life like bioluminescent organisms, and molecules and the effervescence contained within the waters of life. The circles can also be viewed as patterns made by nature, light and rain on surfaces like a car windscreen. Or the photography reading of light giving the ‘bokeh’ effect, a soft out-of-focus blur of light beams. The real aim was to create something universal, sublime and beautiful that connects with our memories of nature and feelings of tranquillity and beauty.

What I enjoy most about my paintings is they make people smile with a sense of wonderment and feelings of happiness as well as giving their walls finesse with a splash of colour for years to come.
